Southern Steel
Southern Steel is a company specialising in steel distribution, meeting all the supply requirements of the steel and engineering industry Australia-wide.
Southern Steel is a member of the Australian Steel Institute and subscribes to all the sustainable practices outlined by this governing body.
Reducing energy and greenhouse gas emissions is a major steel industry endeavour worldwide—both to reduce costs and to improve environmental performance. This initiative has achieved so far:
• 36% of world steel production is from recycled material. Steel made from scrap uses less than half the amount of energy per tonne of steel produced directly from iron ore and carbon.
• A significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is being achieved through the turning of what were once waste products into valuable by-products.
• About 80% of Australia’s 1.6 million tonnes of blast furnace slag is now used as cement substitute in concrete and about 60% of the 1 million tonnes of steelmaking slag is now used as road base to replace quarried material.
• Spent acid from sheet and coil galvanising and pickling processes is being used in fertiliser production
• Coal seam methane gas (which is 20 times more potent than CO2 as a greenhouse gas) is being captured in collieries supplying the steelworks at Port Kembla and turned into electricity.
