Solar
Solar power is the generation of electricity from sunlight. This power can be created directly using photovoltaics, or indirectly by concentrating solar power in a small area.
Solar photovoltaics are arrays of cells containing a material that converts solar radiation into direct current electricity. Producing electricity in this way can decrease and even eliminate the need for purchased electricity—usually electricity gained from burning fossil fuels. If the energy gained from photovoltaic cells exceeds the home's requirements, the extra electricity can be sold back to the energy supplier, typically for credit.
Concentrated solar power is used to produce renewable heat or electricity through steam. These systems use lenses or mirrors and tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight onto a small area. The concentrated light is then used as heat or as a heat source for a conventional power plant—solar thermoelectricity.
Driven by advances in technology and increases in manufacturing scale and sophistication, the cost of photovoltaics has declined steadily since the first solar cells were manufactured. Consumers are also seeing an increase in the availability of solar powered products on the market.
