Overhead—the view above

Good garden design is all about extracting maximum value from a space.

Any single distraction or disturbance you can eliminate from the equation will be an advantage, so blocking the view from tall neighbouring structures, providing practical protection from the elements, enhancing privacy and creating a sense of intimacy are all big pluses.

Installing the right overhead structure will also enable you to use your outdoor room all year round. The trick is to integrate a structure that delivers shade, protection and privacy, while still allowing plenty of natural light. This will create a cosy, defined space without closing it in too much and losing the spacious feel and natural light. The less natural light you have in your new outdoor room, the more you diminish the scope of plants that can sit alongside you while you’re having dinner. Natural light also provides warmth and reduces your need to use excessive artificial lighting.

Some overhead structures to consider are:

Fixed roofing—including pergolas, steel frameworks (see material feature and product review), fixed awnings or sails, and timber-framed structures covered with natureed, transparent plastic, glass, corrugated panels or mini-orb, steel
Movable roofing—including louvres and awnings that wind out manually or automatically
Stand-alone structures—including built-in pavilions and gazebos
Impermanent structures—including umbrellas and tent-style gazebos
